"We really felt like Spancrete was our partner in this project. They knew we had a tight schedule, but they found ways to take days off of the timeframe and just make it work. The entire partnership was remarkable. "
As Concordia University Wisconsin hosted its 2012 football home opener, the university also opened its doors to a new stadium parking structure featuring Spancrete precast products.
The new parking deck, constructed between the football field and the Concordia University Wisconsin property line, features over 700 parking spaces, a large built-in press box, outdoor seating for 800 spectators and a ramp that will allow the university to add an additional level of parking in the future.
Building the new facility presented many challenges, the biggest of which was an extremely aggressive timeline. The project, which was given the go-ahead in March of 2012, was to be completed prior to the start of the fall semester and the beginning of the football season. By the time Spancrete was to arrive on the site, there would only be five weeks to erect the parking deck.
“Spancrete provided valuable design services and, given our early involvement in the process, we were able to provide key design solutions that saved both time and money,” said Spancrete project manager Dick Baumgartner. “Then we worked six days a week during this summer’s near-record breaking heat to make sure the parking deck was erected on time. All told, it took us 27 days to erect the deck. I am extremely proud of our crew.”
Ken Gaschk, senior vice president at Concordia University, is more than pleased with the performance of the Spancrete team. “The university has tight schedules. We have to take one building down and get the new building up and ready to go, quickly. Spancrete was able to accomplish this with ease,” says Gaschk. “On top of all that, the new parking structure fits in well with the buildings we currently have on campus. It looks like it was planned to be here from the start. We’re now looking at other buildings thinking how can we use precast to accomplish projects around the university.”
The parking deck, which features a precast spiral staircase as well as a 90,000 pound precast sign panel, was completed on schedule and opened prior to the start of the fall semester.
