Spancrete Brings Time and Cost Efficiencies to Marquette Interchange Project

Waukesha, Wis. (April 22, 2005) – Spancrete is doing its part to speed construction and hold down costs for the Marquette Interchange Project. This includes supplying precast, prestressed concrete girders and wall panels for at least two of the four key components of the project including the North Leg, and West Leg and Clybourn Street / 16th Street.

“Spancrete is proud to be an integral part of one of Wisconsin’s biggest construction undertakings,” said John Nagy, Spancrete president. “Our precast products were chosen for a variety of reasons including the products availability, affordability, quick installation, low maintenance and aesthetics.”

Spancrete is currently supplying more than 300 bridge girders, weighing almost 15,000 total tons. The girders will be used for all the bridges that go over I-43, as well as a smaller bridge on Clybourn Street. To minimize the inconvenience to motorists, the girders are transported and installed during non-peak traffic hours, in this case, between midnight and 5:00 A.M.

“Because time and cost efficiencies are so important to the project, precast concrete girders remain the ideal solution for the bridges,” said Nagy. “Not only is it more affordable than steel, but it’s also virtually maintenance-free.”

In addition, WisDOT is using 1,300 Spancrete wall panels as an attractive and sturdy erosion-control barrier. Self consolidating concrete is used for the wall panels – a first for WisDOT. It leaves a flawless finish – ideal for intricate architectural elements – and important to this project because of the panel’s multiple reveals.

Beginning in 2004 and set for completion in 2008, the project is expected to cost more than $800 million and affect approximately 300,000 motorists traveling the Interchange daily.
