Spancrete® Studio

Nearing its fifth year, The Spancrete® Studio, the first corporate-sponsored course of its kind, is focused on precast concrete fabrication and construction for architectural students in the United States. By exposing students to technical information from a range of industry sources, the course explores the role of precast technology and its relationship to today's architectural design standards.

"One of the really great things about teaching this course both as a studio instructor and [for] the students is that we really get to have a real hands-on feel for the way that precast works both as an industrial product that's fabricated and also as how it can be installed and how it can be worked with to create new ideas and new methods of design, so this studio really provides students with that opportunity."

Gil Snyder
Professor, University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, SARUP
"In school you rarely have to design a building that can be built...sounds odd but it's the truth. With the Spancrete® studio you had to design buildings that could be built, would stand up, and the building components had to fit on a truck carrying it to the site. The hands on studio was really great, designing the sample panels at full scale was a very valuable project. It was also very exciting to see something we designed, built, and at school. Working with the engineers and other Spancrete® people was also very valuable; everyone was extremely helpful and encouraging of our ideas. Overall I had a great experience with the studio, I think more architecture students should have a studio that lets them explore materials, and learn how the material works."
